Beta Classic Lotus 56 Turbine by David Lawson.

An addition to my Jim Clark collection of slot cars, this is the last Indianapolis car that Clark drove. Although not raced by the Scotsman, he tested the car at the Brickyard in March 1968 before returning to Europe for the start of the racing season. As a press launch and test car it didn't carry race numbers or mirrors but Clark drove the car and the STP-Paxton and pronounced that he had driven the car that would win Indianapolis.

After Clark's fatale accident, it was intended that Jackie Stewart would drive the car but contractural difficulties prevented this, and Mike Spence stepped in. After Spence's death while practicising for the 500, the Lotus entry eventually comprised Graham Hill, Joe Leonard and Art Pollard.Using a "Classic" fibreglass bodyshell which captures the simple wedge shape very well I decided that the focal point of the slot car had to be the driver so I cut out the moulded in figure with the shell and made a cockpit seat to take a full length figure. I used a MaxiBuild resin driver figure as it is of the right period and the proportions are excellent. I cut and reset the arms to fit the driving position and altered the helmet Peak to resemble the Burco item that Clark used.

The chassis is a Scalextric Formula Team item reduced in width and length to fit the shell and has a magnet fitted between the drivers seat and the motor. I sprayed the car with Halfords Volkswagen Mars Red which is quite close to STP red and applied Pattos decals which are fairly accurate. I fitted a piano wire "nerf bar at the rear and a simple representation of the front suspension rocker arms in Plasticard. The test car ran on Halibrand wheels so I will eventually fit either Ninco Cobra or Scalextric GT40 wheels and tyres to give the car that final authentic look.
